These smoulder nicely and so are used to repel insects and to burn through the skin in moxibustion. A treatment for arthritis is to use a birch conk to burn through the skin in the affected area, then sprinkle the burned off area with powdered, dried whulhdulh (Indian Hellebore).

Etymology: Literally, ‟it smoulders”.
